Biography of Robert Collins
Robert was born around August 1812 to Joshua Collins and Maria Magill of Cookstown, Tyrone, Ireland. Robert should not be confused with his first cousin of the same name who graduated from the University of Glasgow in 1822 and practiced at Dublin.
Robert Collins MD (1833) was identified by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in Dublin as "an obscure practitioner of 20 Queen's Street, Belfast who specialized in Dermatology". He was a member of the King's and Queen's College of Physicians of Ireland. During the famine years, Robert practiced as a general physician. Family memories recount "that he worked tirelessly to aid those who became ill and was presented with a silver tea service by the City of Belfast as a token of their esteem." This tea service was in the hands of a great-grandson in Canada as of 1980.
Robert married 31 July 1837 at Fisherwick Presbyterian Church, Belfast to Elizabeth Dunlop, daughter of Major Charles Dunlop and his wife Mary Anne Durham of Edenderry House, Ballylesson, Co. Down, Ireland. By her he had six known children of whom only Joshua married and had children. Robert died 7 May 1852 at his home in Belfast. Elizabeth died 7 July 1898 at Admore House, Bangor, Co. Down, Ireland.
