Biography of Johannes Bruhn
Johannes Bruhn, matriculation slip 1892-93
The first Danish graduate from the University of Glasgow was Johannes Bruhn, who after graduating BSc in Naval Architecture in in 1893 and DSc in 1902, went on to be a Shipbuilder, and the Managing Director of the Det Norske Veritas.
Bruhn was born in Borris, Denmark in 1868, son of Ernst Peter Frederik Christian, a farmer. Having completed his schooling in Birkerød Boarding school in 1887 he started his shipbuilding apprenticeship in Flensburg shipyard. In 1889 Bruhn travelled to Scotland and completed his apprenticeship at Mackie & Thomson's shipyard in Govan, while simultaneously studying at the University of Glasgow. He graduated in 1893 with a BSc in Naval Architecture. In 1900 Bruhn was awarded a gold medal by The Royal Institution of Naval Architects. On 22 April 1902, Bruhn graduated Doctor of Science from the University.
After working for the Cunard Steamship Co Ltd for two years, Bruhn was then employed as a surveyor for Lloyds Register of British and Foreign Shipping.
Dr Johannes Bruhn was the Managing Director of Det Norske Veritas (DNV - Norwegian foundation established to inspect and evaluate the technical condition of Norwegian merchant vessels) from 1909-1939. He published several articles on issues of naval architecture, and in 1914 he represented the Norwegian Government at the London Conference on "Safety of Life at Sea".
Bruhn died at Oslo, in 1940.
