Biography of Peter Gardiner
Peter Gardiner was born in Coupar, Angus on the 16th November 1865. His father, also called Peter, was a gardener by trade.
Peter first matriculated in 1884-85 aged 18 and studied the subjects needed to qualify with a medical degree; subjects like Anatomy, Materia Medica and Therapeutica, Surgery and Midwifery. He was a good student and earned a First Class Certificate for Practical Chemistry in 1885-86.
After his undergraduate degree, an MB CM in 1888, Peter continued on at the University and became an MD in 1895. He is the earliest known research student to complete a thesis on malaria.
Addison’s Matriculation records indicate that he travelled to Somerset, Antigua, the West Indies, London and then Cornwall after he finished his degree.
