Richard Arthur Pearson graduated MD from the University of Glasgow in 1828. Prior to this he had served as Assistant Surgeon at the Battle of Waterloo.

Pearson first served as a Hospital Mate to the Irish Establishment from April 1811 until May 1813. He would likely have studied for an undergraduate medical qualification prior to this, although it is unknown exactly where and when. He spent some time away from Ireland in the Summer and Autumn of 1811, at which time he travelled to Sicily and Malta, still in the position of Hospital Mate. By May 1813 he was positioned as Assistant Surgeon with the 1st Dragoon Guards, and it was in this position that he served at Waterloo on 18th June 1815.

Having completed his MD in 1828, Pearson was then promoted to Surgeon to the 87th Regiment in 1830. He held this position until his retirement upon half pay in March 1847.
