Biography of Rev. Henry William Bell
Henry William Bell was born in Poona (now Pune, India), and was the son of William Bell, an Architect.
Henry began what was to be a very accomplished career at the University of Glasgow in 1855. In his first year he studied Logic, followed in his second with classes in Mathematics and Ethics, winning third prize in the latter for 'general eminence in the exercises and examinations of the class throughout the session". In 1857 and 1858 he took classes in Latin and Greek, winning another prize for 'best translation into English verse of certain Epodes of Horace'. He obtained a BA in 1861, before studying Greek and Physics to achieve an MA, which he graduated with in 1862.
Henry joined the Glasgow Free Church College to study for a degree in theology, where he obtained the highest examination result in his year, and was awarded The Clark Fellowship as a result. Having gained his licence, Henry was made an assistant of the Chalmers’ Free Church, Dundee before being made pastor of the church only a few years later. The membership of the church rose from 130 to 700 during this time.
Henry then joined the Free High Church of Aberdeen in 1871, where he remained until 1907.
