Arthur Rowland Anderson graduated BSc from the University in 1895 and MB CM in 1896. He was the son of William Anderson, a Glasgow trained physician who emigrated to Newfoundland. Anderson was born in Brigus in 1874. He attended the Church of England Academy (later Bishop Feild College) in St John's, and St John's College at Hurstpierpoint in Sussex.

Anderson matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1890. He received a BSc in 1895 and his MB CM on 25 July 1896. While a student, Arthur Anderson received a First Class certificate in clinical surgery, junior division, 1893, and a First Class certificate in clinical surgery, Senior Division, 1895. After finishing his education at Glasgow, Anderson took a temporary position with the Commercial Cable Company in Waterville, Co. Kerry. In 1896, Anderson held a residency at Glasgow's Royal Victoria Infirmary. A year later, he became an assistant at the Union Mills Asylum on the Isle of Man.

Anderson returned to Newfoundland in April 1897 and took over his deceased father's practice and position with the Western Union Telegraph Company in Heart's Content. He was made Chief Medical Officer for Western Union in 1920. Anderson was involved with the local community in a number of roles, and served as a Reserve Major with the Newfoundland Church Lads Brigade. In 1923, he helped to organise the Newfoundland Medical Association and served as its President in 1928. He died in Heart's Content in 1937.
