Addison 1727-1897 reads: Born 21st January 1826; son of Sir Archibald Alison, the historian of Europe; Captain 72nd Highlanders, 1846; Brevet Major, 1856; Lieutenent Colonel, 1858; Colonel 1867; Major General, 1877; Lieutenant General 1889; retired 1893; served (a) in Crimea and Indian Mutiny (Military Secretary to Lord Clyde) and lost an arm at relief of Lucknow, (b) at Gold Coast in Ahantee Expedition of 1873-74, and (c) in military expedition to Egypt in 1882, leading Highland Brigade at battle of Tel-el-Kebir; G.C.B. LLD Edinburgh 1884.
