Biography of David Smylie
David Smylie, son of Thomas Smylie from near Castlederg, Co Tyrone, born 1701. Educated at the University of Glasgow, where he graduated MA (1727), licenced at Strabane Presbyterian Church, 1732. Ordained at Finvoy Presbyterian Church, County Antrim, 23rd July 1734, resigned 1739. Installed at Maghera 1739. Retired 1778. Died 23rd July 1780. (Source: Fasti Book of Presbyterian Ministers)
"Died the 23rd ult, in the 80th year of his age, the Rever David Smylie, forty years dissenting Minister of Maghera, in the County of Derry. He was a steady friend of civl, religious liberty, and indulgent husband and tender parent and is sincerly lamented by all who knew him." David Smylie was great grandfather of the Reverend Smylie Robson DD, an Edinburgh graduate and ordained at Maghera. Also the Reverend James Alexander Robson, his brother, who was Clerk to Sessions at Maghera for many years then ordained and was Minister at Tobermore, 1767-1884. Their nephew was the Reverend Robert Robson, Minister at Hillhall Presbyterian Church, 1883-1906.
