Noel Paton
Diarmid Noel Paton was Regius Professor of Physiology, 1906 to 1928.
Paton was born in Edinburgh, the son of the artist Sir (Joseph) Noel Paton. He studied at the University of Edinburgh and at Vienna and Paris, graduating BSc in 1880 and MB, CM, with first-class honours in 1882. In 1886 he became Superintendent of the Research Laboratory at the Royal College of Physicians, Edinburgh, leaving in 1906 to take the Regius Chair in Glasgow.
At the University, Paton continued his pioneering research in the metabolism and nutrition, investigating the diets of working class people. In 1913 he supervised a major project investigating rickets in Glasgow, reporting some of the results in Social and Economic Factors in the Causation of Rickets (1918), which he wrote with M Ferguson. He published more than ninety academic papers and several textbooks.
During the summer of 1927, Severo Ochoa, who went onto to share the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1959 with Arthur Kornberg, paid a visit to the University of Glasgow to work under Professor Paton.
