Biography of Christina Larner
Christina Jessy Larner, née Ross (1933-1983), made pioneering studies in the history of witchcraft and was appointed titular Professor of Sociology at the University in 1983.
Larner was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh (MA, 1957, PhD, 1962). She came to Glasgow as a part-time assistant in the Department of History and was a Social Science Research Council Conversion Fellow in the Department of Politics and Sociology from 1966 to 1968, and then SSRC Research Fellow. She was appointed Lecturer in Sociology at the University in 1972 and was subsequently Senior Lecturer. In 1983, shortly before her death, she was awarded a titular professorship.
Among her publications, Larner's Enemies of God: The Witch Hunt in Scotland (1981) and Witchcraft and Religion: The Politics of Popular Belief (1984) were especially influential and helped establish the history of witchcraft as a legitimate field of academic study.
