George Tyrell Jamaica

Biography of George Tyrell

Very little is known for sure about George Tyrell’s family background in Jamaica other than that his father was Joseph Tyrell. A person of that name was listed as an attorney and assistant judge or magistrate in the Kingston Civil List in 1821. If this was George’s father, he and his family reaped considerable financial benefit from enslaved people both as an owner, a business partner and an attorney. As an owner Joseph was associated with seven awards of compensation in 1836 and as an attorney or receiver in other claims.

George Tyrell enrolled to study Medicine at Glasgow University in 1822 and remained until 1825. In his first year he studied Anatomy, Chemistry and Practice of Medicine. The following year, 1823-2, he took classes in Anatomy, Midwifery, Surgery, Materia Medica and again Practice of Medicine. In his final year he enrolled in Anatomy, Medicine, Chemistry, Surgery, Materia Medica and Infirmary (clinical). He did not graduate from the university.
