Biography of Daniel Young
Daniel Greer Young was a Professor of Surgical Paediatrics (1995-98). He has been an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Division of Developmental Medicine since 1999.
Young attended Wishaw High School and graduated MB ChB from the University in 1956. From 1957 to 1959 he served in the National Service where he was in charge of the Medical Reception Center in Kumasi, Ghana. He received a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from Liverpool University in 1959. He then returned to Glasgow in 1960 as Assistant Lecturer in Physiology and from 1961 to 1964 was a Registrar in Surgery. He became a Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons (Edin) in 1962.
Young moved to the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London where he was Senior Registrar and Resident Assistant Surgeon from 1965 to 1967. Over the following two years he was a Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Surgery at the Institute for Child Health, London and Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children and at Queen Elizabeth Hospital for Children, Hackney.
In 1969 Young returned to Glasgow to take up an appointment as Head of the University Department of Surgical Paediatrics based at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhill. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasg) in 1972. He took up a position in the University as Reader in Surgical Paediatrics in 1992 and Titular Professor of Surgical Paediatrics in 1995. Young became a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in 1996 and received an MD from the University of Wroclaw, Poland, in 2008.
