Biography of Geoffrey Webb

Geoffrey (known as Geoff) Webb (1938 - 2007) joined the University in 1963 to take up a postdoctoral position. In 1965 he was appointed Assistant Lecturer and in 1966 Lecturer. He was appointed to a titular professorship of Chemistry in 1988 and a personal professorship of Catalytic Science in 1995. He was Dean of the Faculty of Science. He retired from the University in 2003.

Webb was born in 1938 in the village of Heather in Leicestershire. He attended school in Ashby and then studied Chemistry at the University of Hull. He graduated BSc in 1959. Following graduation, he started work as a science teacher at Greatfield High School in Hull while also carrying out part-time research at the University of Hull. In 1960 he decided to study full-time for a PhD in the area of catalytic hydrogenation using ruthenium and osmium catalysts. He was awarded a PhD from the University of Hull in 1963.

Webb moved to Glasgow in 1963 to work with Professor Samuel Thomson at the University. Webb's research concentrated on heterogeneous catalysis. He was awarded a DSc in 1981 by the University for his research contribution and was elected to a Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1995.
