Biography of Robert Miles

Robert Miles joined the University in 1978 as Lecturer in Sociology. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1988 and Reader in 1990. He was appointed Professor of Sociology in 1994.

Miles attended Dover Grammar School for Boys. He graduated BSc with first class honours in Sociology from the University of Bath in 1973. Following graduation, he worked as a Research Associate in Sociology at the SSRC Research Unit on Ethnic Relations at the University of Bristol.

Miles was awarded a PhD by the University of Glasgow in 1986. He was Visiting Professor at Glasgow Caledonian University from 1992 to 1997. He served as Associate Dean (External Relations) for the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Glasgow from 1997 to 2000. He was Head of the Department of Sociology from 1993 to 1999.

In 2000, Miles left the University to take up the position of Director of Study Abroad and Professor of Sociology and International Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Since 2006, he has been Associate Dean for Study Abroad and International Exchange.
