Biography of Robert Dickie

Robert Dickie graduated MB ChB from the University in 1942.

He was born at East Kilbride on 24 February 1919, and was educated at Hutcheson Boys Grammar School before going on to the University of Glasgow. During his time at Glasgow, Dickie was President of the Glasgow University Athletic Club, and graduated in 1942.

Upon graduation he joined the Colonial Medical Service in 1943 and worked as a medical officer in Nigeria and the British Cameroons from 1943 until 1955.

He was Deputy Director of Medical Services at Sarawak (Borneo) from 1955 to 1964, and Director from 1964 to 1967. During his time in Sarawak, Dickie was Chieftain of the St Andrews Society, President of Kuching Rotary Club and Deputy President of the Sarawak Branch of the Red Cross.

He was appointed Assistant Director, then Director, Hospitals Division, of the New Zealand Department of Health in 1967 until his retirement in 1980. He died at Kerikeri, New Zealand, on 30 May 2014.
