Biography of John Edward Huia Cogan
John Edward Huia Cogan graduated MB ChB from the University in 1928. He was born at Shanghai, son of John, a master mariner of the New Zealand Merchant Navy.
Cogan lived in China and New Zealand before receiving his education in the UK, at Berkhamsted School and Glasgow High School. He enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1923 to study Medicine. He was awarded several prizes throughout his studies: first class certificates for Practical Physiology (1925-26) and Clinical Medicine (summer 1928); and second class certificates in Clinical Surgery (1925-26), Junior Clinical Medicine (1926-27) and Senior Clinical Medicine (1927-28).
Cogan went into general practice in Hong Kong, where he became interested in ocular diseases in the Chinese. He was appointed ophthalmic surgeon in the University of Hong Kong. In 1934, he returned to the UK as the first Cruise research scholar in clinical ophthalmology and a senior clinical assistant at Moorfields Eye Hospital. In 1935 he took the diploma in ophthalmology at Oxford, before taking up an appointment as ophthalmologist at the Kent and Sussex Hospital.
Cogan was one of the first British ophthalmologist to use alphachymotrypsin in cataract extractions, and undertook a sponsored tour of Australia and New Zealand to demonstrate the technique.
Cogan worked as a consultant ophthalmologist at Tunbridge Wells until his retirement in 1971. He died on 25 June 1976.
