Biography of John Paul Jones Paton

John Paul Jones Paton graduated MB ChB from the University in 1933 and MD in 1938.

He was born at Hankow, part of modern day Wuhan, son of William, a government pilot.

Paton enrolled at the University in 1928 to study Medicine. During his medical degree, he was awarded a first class certificate in Systematic Surgery (1930-31) and three second class certificates for Clinical Medicine (1931-32), Ophthalmology (1931-32), and Midwifery (1933). He went on to graduate MD with commendation on 1 July 1938 with his thesis Whooping cough...vaccine therapy.

Paton held positions at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and the EMS Hospital at Mauchline. During the Second World War he served as Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Medical Corps as a medical specialist.

He was appointed head physician at Rashid Hospital, Dubai, before taking up the appointment of Professor of Medicine at the University of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, modern day King Saud University, founded in 1957.

He was Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1956, and published several research articles in the Scottish Medical Journal, such as 'Glandular Toxoplasmosis' (1958), and 'Late Rickets and Osteomalacia in Glasgow Pakistanis' (1962).

He retired in 1981, and died in 1990.
