Biography of Bernard Liebling Halpern
Bernard Liebling Halpern came to the University of Glasgow in 1912 at the age of 19. He took classes in Mathematics, Natural Philosophy, and Laboratory work.
Halpern was born in Tarnopol, now known as Ternopil in western Ukraine but was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which had a considerably large Jewish population. His father, David, was a draper, and moved the family to Scotland from Tarnopol at some point before 1901, and resided in the Gorbals, an area of Glasgow with a large Jewish community at that time.
