Biography of Ian Inglis
Ian Godfrey Inglis was born in Somerset. He attended school at Wellington College, Berkshire, and was awarded a BA by Queen's College, Oxford before matriculating at the University of Glasgow to study for a Bachelor of Laws in 1956. He graduated LLB in 1959.
Inglis rowed while at Oxford and must have continued in Glasgow, however there is very little rowing coverage in the student publications of the late 1950s. In 1958 he was selected for the Scotland Eight boat for that year's British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff. There, Inglis and his team mates finished in fourth place.
Inglis quickly found success as a litigation lawyer and from 1961 to 1996 was a partner of Glasgow commercial law firm Maclay, Murray and Spens. His distinguished career included: a major patent case associated with North Sea-oil exploration; contributions on Scots Law to a Lloyds of London international compendium on ship arrestments; and appointment to the Phillimore Committee which led to the Contempt of Court Act 1981.
Inglis married Rosemary King in 1961 and they had two daughters and two sons.
