Andrew Watt Kay
Sir Andrew Watt Kay (1916-2011) was a graduate of the University who was Regius Professor of Surgery from 1964 until 1981.
Kay graduated from the University MB, ChB in 1939, winning the Brunton Memorial Prize. He was awarded an MD and the Bellahouston Gold Medal in 1944, and ChM in 1949. Kay worked as an assistant to the Regius Professor of Surgery from 1942 until 1956 with an interval from 1946 until 1948 when he completed his military service as a Major in the RAMC.
In 1956, Kay became Consultant Surgeon in charge of the wards at the Glasgow Western Infirmary. He was appointed Professor of Surgery at the University of Sheffield two years later, returning to Glasgow in 1964 to fill the Regius Chair.
Kay's main research interests lay in the field of gastroenterology. He was President of the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1972 to 1974, and part-time Chief Scientist to the Scottish Home and Health Department from 1973 until 1981. He was knighted in 1973.
Sir Andrew Kay died on the 1st February 2011 in Paisley, aged 94. He is survived by his second wife, Lady Phyl Kay, his four children, four stepchildren, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
