Kamalesh Sharma received the honorary degree of DUniv on Commemoration Day, 18th June 2014, in recognition of his work within the Commonwealth of Nations in Commonwealth Games year. Sharma was educated at the Modern School in New Delhi, before attending St Stephen’s College in Delhi and later King’s College, Cambridge.

He was an officer in the Indian Foreign Service from 1965-2001 and served as India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1997-2002. From 2002-2004 he served as UN Secretary General’s special representative to East Timor and was appointed as the High Commissioner of India to Britain in 2004.

General Kamalesh Sharma is Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations and a former Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He has also been the Chancellor of Queen’s University, Belfast, since July 2009.
