Alexander John Copeland graduated BSc from the University on 8th October 1914.
He was born in Middlesex England on the 6th of March 1894, and was the son of Walter Charles Copeland whose occupation was a Barrister at Law. Copeland attended the University of Glasgow from 1911-14 where he studied subjects such as Anatomy, and Advanced Botany and Zoology in his final year. He received a second class certificate in Botany and a second class honours certificate in Vertebrate Morphology.
