Biography of Stephen Ullmann
Stephen Ullmann graduated DLitt from the University in 1949, and was lecturer of Philology and Linguistics at the University from 1946-1953. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, son of Stephen, a factory manager.
Ullmann received a PhD from the University of Budapest in 1936, before leaving for the United Kingdom in 1939, where he became a British citizen.
After working for the BBC Monitoring Service, Ullmann gained an appointment as lecturer in Romance Philology and Linguistics at the University of Glasgow in 1946. He was promoted to a senior lectureship in 1950, after having having graduated DLitt on 5 November 1949 with the thesis titled "The Principles of Semantics" under Professor Ritchie Girvan.
Ullmann went on to hold positions at the University of Leeds in Philology, and in 1968 he held the chair of Romance languages at the University of Oxford until his death in 1976.
