Biography of Sheena Dobbie

Sheena McDonald Dobbie (1915-92) was born in Dennistoun, Glasgow, and matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1933. She studied for an MA, taking classes in French, German and Spanish, as well as Geography, and graduated in 1936. She later continued her studies gaining a Bachelor of Education in 1945. She went on to become a teacher in the city and married John Green in 1947.

While a student, Dobbie belonged to the Glasgow University Athletic Club athletics section, and competed widely. She was recognised as an 'exceedingly good new talent' after winning the 220 yards at the Scottish Championships at Ibrox Park in 1934. She was also Scottish Champion at 220 yards in 1935, and in 1936 took silver in the 220 yards and the discus. Not only a talented sprinter, Dobbie also played hockey and badminton for the University. She awarded Full Blues for athletics and badminton in 1934, and for hockey in 1937, and was hockey captain in 1935–-6 and athletics captain in 1937–8.

In 1934 Dobbie was selected to represent Scotland at the British Empire Games in London. There, she was part of the bronze medal-winning 660 yards relay team, and also competed in the 4 x 440 yards relay and individual 220 yards.

Dobbie's siblings Archibald (MA, 1933) and Daisy (MA, 1938) also represented the University on the sports field: Archibald was awarded Half Blues in 1934 for badminton; Daisy Full Blues for hockey in 1937. Daisy captained the hockey team in 1937–8.
