Biography of James Lindsay

James Lindsay matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1807. He was the only son of James Lindsay, a merchant on the island of Tobago. Little is known of father or son’s activities, but given the younger man was sent to Glasgow for education is likely his wealthy father operated at the upper echelons the slave economy: as a merchant, planter or surgeon. In 1808, Scots owned over fifty percent (53 of 100) estates on the island.
