Biography of Peter Alexander McCallum
Peter Alexander McCallum Peter Alexander McCallum graduated MB ChB from the University of Glasgow in 1913. He was born at Ekwendeni, northern Malawi, on 22 April 1891 to a farmer, also named Peter McCallum.
McCallum was educated at Rothesay Academy, before matriculating at the University in 1908 to study Medicine. During his time at the University, he received numerous prizes, ranging from first and second-class certificates in subjects such as Chemistry, Practical Physiology, Clinical Surgery, Operative Surgery and Practical Zoology. He graduated in 1913 with MB ChB.
Upon graduation McCallum was house surgeon at the Western Infirmary, and subsequently resident physician at the Knightswood and Ruchill fever hospitals. During the First World War, McCallum enlisted through a medical recruiting scheme in 1916, at the age of 24. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps as lieutenant and subsequently as Captain, and was mentioned in dispatches in 1918.
After the war, McCallum was appointed assistant school medical officer to the Glasgow education authority. In 1920, he gained the Diploma of Public Health from Cambridge and was appointed deputy medical officer of health of Torquay. He was elected Fellow of the British Medical Association, dying suddenly in 1959.
