Biography of David Hynd
David Hynd, MB ChB 1924
David Hynd graduated MA from the University in 1919, BsC in 1922, and MB ChB in 1924.
He was born in Perth, Scotland, son of Samuel, a locomotive foreman.
Hynd first enrolled at the University in 1913, taking classes in Latin, Greek, Hellenic Greek (Higher), and Mathematics (Higher), for which he received fifth prize and a certificate in summer 1914. After two years, his studies were interrupted by the First World War, during which he spent two years at Beardmore's Parkhead Forge making munitions, and later served with the 3rd Highland Light Infantry. He resumed his his studies in 1918, and the same year married fellow Glasgow student, Kanema Sharpe.
Hynd continued with his Arts degree, taking classes in Scottish History and Literature, Logic and Metaphysics to graduate MA on 25 June 1919. He immediately continued on to a BSc course, with classes in Natural Philosophy, Chemistry, Physiology, Anatomy, Zoology, graduating BSc in Pure Science on 18 April 1922. Hynd finally graduated MB ChB in 1924.
Both he and his wife were ordained to the ministry and became missionaries of the Church of Nazarene to Swaziland, which was then a British protectorate in South Africa. They were stationed at Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital in Bremersdorp. Hynd made significant developments to the small mission hospital, introducing a training program for nurses in 1928 along with new wards and mobile clinics, which led to the establishment of the Leper hospital at Manzini. He founded the Red Cross of Swaziland in 1932. As well as his medical contribution, Hynd was active in the Church, serving as president of the Swaziland Conference of Churches, and in Educational, serving as a member of the national Board of Education. In recognition for his contributions, Hynd was awarded CBE in 1947. With Swaziland’s independence, he was also awarded the Independence Medal (1968) and the Medal of Royal Order (1982) by King Sobhuza II. He also features on a postage stamp.
Hynd died at Mbabane, Swaziland, in 1990, eight years after his wife. They were both given services at Sharpe Memorial Church in Manzini.
Their children, Margaret Jane Sharpe and Samuel Wilson Hynd, would also return to the University for their degrees.
