Biography of William Wellwood Moncreiff

William Wellwood Moncreiff was born at Cavel, Fife around 1775, son of Reverend Sir Henry Moncreiff Wellwood, and brother of James Wellwood.

Moncreiff matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1788 and studied for at least four sessions until 1792. He gained a multitude of Class Prizes in Latin, Logic and Moral Philosophy during this time, but he did not graduate.

In 1793 he was awarded the Snell Exhibition for study at Balliol College, Oxford, and he matriculated there on 20th March 1793. He was suspended from Oxford on 27 June 1795 until 14 January 1796 for involvement in a riot. However, he went on to graduate from Oxford BA in 1797, MA in 1799, BCL and DCL in 1803.

He was Barrister-at-Law of the Middle Temple in 1800, and became King’s Advocate in the Admiralty Court of Malta.

He died in London, unmarried, on 5 September 1813.
