Biography of Hugh Alexander Fleming

Hugh Alexander Fleming graduated MB ChB from the University in 1940. He was born in Ipoh, Malaysia, son of Alexander, an engineer, and brother of engineering student, Alexander Fleming.

Fleming enrolled at the University in 1935, and during his studies he was awarded three first class certificates for Clinical Medicine (in 1938 and 1939), and in Diseases of the ear, throat and nose (1939).

In 1941, Fleming was listed as a temporary surgeon lieutenant in the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve.

Fleming was honorary surgeon at Whitehaven and West Cumberland Hospital, and was in partnership at a private practice at Whitehaven, Cumberland.
