George Hewitt Dundon, 1913-1914
George Hewitt Dundon graduated BSc from the University in 1914. He was born in 1893 in Limerick, son of John, a solicitor.
Dundon came to Glasgow in 1911 to study Engineering. Although he specialised in Electrical Engineering, he was required to pass exams in English and Latin in his first year. Dundon graduated on 20 April 1914. With the outbreak of the First World War Dundon joined the war effort. He served in the 5th Field Company in the Reserve Battalion and rose to the rank of lieutenant. In 1918 he was awarded the Military Cross, the London Gazette reporting that he "superintended the repairing and opening-up of a road under heavy shell fire. It was due to his untiring energy and example that this important road was made passable for the passage of guns and ammunition."
Dundon died in 1971 at the age of 78. He is buried in Deansgrange Cemetery in Dublin, in the St Patrick Section.
