Biography of David Livingstone Wilson
David Livingstone Wilson graduated MB ChB from the University in 1948.
He was born at Chitambo, Serenje, Northern Rhodiesia, modern day Zambia, son of Hubert Francis Wilson, a medical missionary, and great-grandson of the missionary explorer David Livingstone.
Wilson enrolled at the University in 1943 for five years. Among the usual medical classes, Wilson also took classes in Medical Jurisprudence and Public Health. After graduation, he went on to obtain a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene from Liverpool, before embarking on medical missionary work. Wilson returned to Zambia, working from 1951-59 at the Lubwa Mission Hospital. During that time he became proficient in Chibemba, the local language.
Wilson returned to the UK, where he practiced in public health at Carlisle and Newcastle from the 1960s. He retired in 1988 to Auchterarder and then to Helensburgh, where he passed away in 2010.
Wilson continued to serve the memory of his great-grandfather: he was governor of the David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre, and in 1993 went on an 300-mile expedition that followed David Livingstone’s last journey in Tanzania, Burundi, and Zambia.
