Margaret Louise Whyte was born in Hong Kong, the daughter of Robert Whyte, Chief Engineer.

She matriculated at the University in 1923.

In her time there, she studied Latin, English, French, Italian, Moral Philosophy, History and Geology, for which she was awarded a second class certificate in session 1924-5.

Whyte graduated on 20 November 1926.

She worked as a teacher in Ullapool, and on 12 September 1934, she married Alexander Cargill, a bank teller, at West Church in Inverness.
