Biography of Emilie Ellen Guthmann
Emilie Ellen Guthmann graduated BSc from the University of Glasgow in 1937 and MBChB in 1940.
She was born in Mainz, Germany, daughter of Julius Guthmann, a Jewish lawyer. The family had fled to the UK to escape the persecution of Jewish lawyers by the National Socialists in Mainz.
Guthmann enrolled at the University in 1935, initially taking classes in Botany, Chemistry, Natural Philosophy, Zoology, Physiology and Anatomy. After graduating BSc in 1937, Guthmann continued on to study Medicine. She also took classes in Pathology at the Royal Infirmary under Professor John Shaw Dunn for which she received a class prize in 1937. She received another prize in Botany under Professor John Walton in the same year. In 1939, she took a class in Clinical Surgery under Professor Archibald Young and was awarded the third prize. At the Royal Samaritan Hospital, she took classes in Ophthamology, Psychiatry and Public Health. She gained the the Membership examination (MRCOG) to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1946.
Guthmann worked as a honorary surgeon at the Royal Samaritan Hospital for Women in Glasgow and Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital, before moving to London where she was resident obstetrician and gynaecologist at St Alfege's Hospital, Greenwich.
Guthmann married another medical practitioner, Fred Julian Bernstein, in London, changing her name to Emily Ellen Bernstein. She continued in London as a clinical assistant at the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson and Obstetric Hospital, and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and member of the British Medical Association.
