Biography of Robert Lee
Robert Lee (1793-1877) was briefly Regius Professor of Midwifery at the University in 1834.
Lee graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh and was appointed to a post with the East India Company before going to Russia as personal physician to Prince Vorontsov, Governor-General of the Crimea. He was an obstetric physician and lecturer in London when, in 1833, King William IV issued him with a commission for the Chair in Glasgow. He was finally admitted to office at the University in April the following year, but had quit by the middle of July owing, it is said, to local opposition to the appointment. He was subsequently Professor of Midwifery and a lecturer in Midwifery and the Diseases of Women at St George's Hospital in London.
