John Munro Kerr
John Martin Munro Kerr (1868-1960) was a graduate of the University who was appointed Muirhead Professor of Midwifery and Gynaecology in 1911 and was Regius Professor of Midwifery from 1927 to 1934. He was awarded an LLD in 1935.
Born in Glasgow, the son of a ship owner, Kerr graduated from the University MB, CM in 1890 and MD in 1909. He continued his studies in Germany and Dublin before his appointment in 1894 as assistant to Professor Murdoch Cameron, Regius Professor of Midwifery at Glasgow. He joined the staff of the city's Royal Maternity Hospital in 1896 and became visiting surgeon there in 1900. In 1907, he was appointed Chief of the second Gynaecological Unit at the Western Infirmary.
Kerr was recognised as a leading authority on Obstetrics in Britain and published several textbooks, including Operative Midwifery (1908) and Maternal Mortality and Morbidity, (1933) which won him the Katherine Bishop Harman Prize in 1934. He also edited the Historical Review of British Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 1800-1850 (1954) alongside RW Johnstone and MH Phillips. He sat on the board of the Royal Samaritan Hospital for Women, was President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1933 to 1935, and in 1950 he was the first recipient of the Royal Society of Medicine's Blair-Bell Medal. He was one of the initial signatories of the RCOG's Articles of Association and served as its first Vice President from 1929 to 1932.
