Biography of Mei'e Ren

Ren Mei'e graduated PhD from the University of Glasgow in 1939.

Ren was born in Ningbo, China, son of Chin-Shen, a businessman. He graduated BSc from the National Central University of China, modern day Nanjing University, in 1934 before coming to Glasgow in 1936 as a research student of geomorphology. With funding from the Sino-British Boxer Indemnity Fund Foundation, Ren studied under Edward Battersby Bailey, Professor of Geology, and was examined by his successor Professor Arthur Trueman, and Alexander Stevens. The external examiner for his thesis was Prof William Bernard Robinson King of University College London. Ren graduated on 11 November 1939 with his thesis The morphological evolution of Clydesdale and its neighbouring regions.

While at the University, Ren served as secretary of the Glasgow Chinese Student Union, and helped to organise a flag day in Glasgow in 1938 to raise funds for Chinese refugees of the Sino-Japanese War.

He went on to lecture at Chekiang University (modern day Zhejiang University), Fudan University and later Nanjing University, where he was appointed head of the Department of Geology. Ren was elected Honorary Chairman of the China Society for Oceanography and of the Chinese Geographical Society. For his contributions to geoscience, Ren was awarded the Victoria Medal from the Royal Geographical Society of London in 1986, and was also made an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the highest academic or professional honor in China.
