While at the University, Ren served as secretary of the Glasgow Chinese Student Union, and helped to organise a flag day in Glasgow in 1938 to raise funds for Chinese refugees of the Sino-Japanese War.

He went on to lecture at Chekiang University (modern day Zhejiang University), Fudan University and later Nanjing University, where he was appointed head of the Department of Geology.
