William Gillies Whittaker
William Gillies Whittaker (1876-1944) was the first Gardiner Professor of Music at the University, from 1930 until 1941, and was responsible for raising the subject to full degree status.
Born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Whittaker originally intended to study for a career in Science but switched to Music, working for many years as a music teacher and playing the organ in churches. He was a member of staff at Armstrong College from 1899 to 1929, during which time he founded the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Bach Choir, and during his tenure of the Gardiner Chair in Glasgow he was also Principal of the Scottish National Academy of Music.
