Samuel Brown Wylie was born in Antrim, Ireland on 21 May, 1773. He graduated MA from the University of Glasgow in 1797, and returned to Ireland to teach in Ballymena.
Wylie's pro-independent stance for Ireland forced him to flee to America in 1797, where he tutored at Cheltemham, Pennsylvania (1797-98) and at the University of Pennsylvania (1798).
Wylie was licensed to preach in America after studying Theology under the Reform Presbyterian Church in 1799, and he became Pastor of the First Reformed Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, 1802-52, as well as Professor of the Theological Seminary of the RP Church, (1809-51).
Wylie received honorary degrees from Dickson College (DD, 1816) and the University of Pennsylvania (1828). In the same year, he was appointed Professor of Ancient Languages (1828-45) at the University of Pennsylvania and Vice-Provost (1838-45), both positions he retained until his retirement in 1845.
