Biography of Hermann Georg Fiedler

Hermann Georg Fiedler lectured at Queen Margaret College and the University of Glasgow from 1888-1890.

Fiedler studied German philology and literature at the University of Leipzig under Friedrich Zarncke, gaining his PhD degree in July 1888. In October of that year, Zarncke facilitated Fiedler's appointment as lecturer in German at Queen Margaret College and the University of Glasgow.

In October 1890, Fiedler was then appointed Professor of German at Mason College, modern day University of Birmingham, and was key in the creation of their school of modern languages in 1903.

In July 1907, Fiedler accepted the Chair of German at the University of Oxford. He became a British citizen in 1911, but during the First World War felt forced to offer his resignation in 1915, which was rejected, and he continued to maintain the German department at Oxford during the war.
