Herbert Kay (né Koniec) graduated MB ChB from the University in 1952. He was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia (now Slovakia), in 1928, however, after the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was established by Nazi Germany in June 1939, he was transported to the UK by Kindertransport. While his sister had arrived before him in the UK, his parents were left and later died in Auschwitz in 1942.

Kay was transported to Glasgow where he was reunited with his sister, but at the outbreak of war, was evacuated to Kirkmichael, Ayrshire where he settled with the Muir family. Despite being able to speak only Hungarian, Czech and German on his arrival in the UK, Kay proved a promising student at Kirkmichael Primary School and Carrick Academy, and gained a Carnegie scholarship to study Medicine at the University of Glasgow in 1947. The same year he was granted British citizenship.

Among the courses Kay took during his studies at Glasgow were Public Health, Forensic Medicine, Surgery, Medicine, Midwifery, Paediatrics, and Clinical Surgery for which he won a class prize. As well as receiving a grant and scholarship from the Carnegie Trust, Kay was also the recipient of an Education Authority grant, and successfully graduated MB ChB in 1952.

Upon graduation, Kay obtained the post of house doctor with Professor Alstead, and went on to pursue a distinguished career in general practice, first in Tadcaster (1954-8), then in Middlesbrough (1958-90), where he joined Harry Gardner in his medical practice.

Kay was considered a pioneer in vocational training for general practice, and was awarded a fellowship from both the British Medical Association and the Royal College of General Practitioners.
