Biography of Gleb Nikolaevich Zekulin
Gleb Nikolaevich Zekulin was given a full-time appointment as Tutor in the Russian Department of the University of Glasgow in 1956, replacing Professor Frank Borras.
Gleb was born in Czechoslovakia in 1922. He spent part of the War as a forced labourer in Germany and returned to Prague once the War was over, studying at the School of Economics of the Prague Polytechnical Institute.
After a brief imprisonment at the hands of the Communists in 1948 he escaped with his family to Austria, and then to Britain. He found a position in Russian at Liverpool University before his appointment at Glasgow. He then taught in the United States and the family emigrated to Canada in 1963. In 1978 he was appointed Full Professor in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Toronto and retired in 1987.
