Biography of Joseph Sewall
Joseph Sewall was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity by the University of Glasgow in 1731.
Sewall was born in August of 1688 to Samuel Sewall, chief justice in Massachusetts and publicist of the first anti-slavery tract in the USA, The Selling of Joseph, in 1700. Sewall was a Harvard graduate and ordained to the Congregational ministry in 1713, after which he served as Minister of the Old South Church, Boston, 1713-69, the fourth minister of the church. A fellow of Harvard college, 1728-65, Sewall also served as a member of the commission appointed for the propagation of the Gospel in New England, and was member of the Scottish Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. His fellow Bostonians and ministers, Samuel Mather and Benjamin Colman, were likewise conferred a DD by the University of Glasgow in 1731.
