Biography of Max Gorfinkel
Max Gorfinkel graduated MB ChB from the University in 1926, and MD in 1948.
Gorfinkel was born in Jacobstown Russia, son of Harris, a merchant. The family moved to Cape Town where Gorfinkel received his education at the South African College School, and then the University of Cape Town, where he obtained his MA in Anatomy in 1922. With the proceeds of the Croll Memorial Travelling Scholarship, Gorfinkel came to the University of Glasgow. He was awarded the Mackintosh Bursary and medals in Pathology and Clinical Surgery. After graduation Gorfinkel spent a year as a Medical Officer at the Anglo-Ecudorian Oilfields in Ecuador, before returning to Cape Town in 1928 to set up his general practice. In 1938, Gorfinkel returned to the UK as a postgraduate in London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. He graduated MD from the University in 1948 with his thesis The etiology and haematology of obscure fever.
Gorfinkel returned to Cape Town where he was Honorary Medical Registrar at the Groote Schuur Hospital.
