Biography of Samuel Lovell Davidson
Samuel Lovell Davidson graduated from the University MB ChB in 1938. He was born in Rio Tinto, Huelva, where his father, Norman, was the doctor at the Rio Tinto Mines.
In 1931, Davidson enrolled at the University, attending classes in Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Physiology, Pathology, and Midwifery and Sick Children, graduating MB ChB in 1938.
Specialising in paediatrics, Davidson had a distinguished career as a consultant paediatric surgeon, and held at several appointments at various hospitals, including Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the Sick Children’s Hospital in Edinburgh, and the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Yorkhill, Glasgow (1948-1977). He gained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1944, and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow in 1965.
In 1919, Davidson was diagnosed as having diabetes mellitus, which had no known treatment. He became the first diabetic in Scotland to receive Insulin injections in 1923, a course of treatment which he continued for the rest of his life. 76 years on Insulin made him the longest living diabetic patient.
