Biography of Mark Anamua Hayford

Mark Anamua Hayford born Cape Coast, Gold Coast (Ghana), son of Reverend Mark Christian Hayford, an African clergyman who founded his own Gold Coast Baptist Church. Hayford being the translation of the Ghanaian surname, Afua, changed during colonisation.

Hayford matriculated at the University in 1926 to study Medicine, attending classes in Chemistry, Physics, Zoology and Laboratory. He gained his triple qualification in 1934 (LRCP, LRCS Edin, LRFPS Glas). Thereafter he was appointed medical officer at the Colonial Hospital, Accra, and medical officer at the African Hospital, Kumasi.
