Biography of Arthur Esdaile Macgregor

Arthur Esdaile Macgregor graduated MA from the University in 1904. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on the 7 January 1885, son of Reverend Duncan Macgregor. The family returned to live in Scotland where Duncan became minister at Dunoon Baptist Church and Principal of the Baptist College there before Arthur first matriculated at the University in 1901, aged 16, to study for an Arts degree.

During the course of his studies, Macgregor achieved several prizes for his academic performance, including a First Class Certificate of Merit for Moral Philosophy under Professor Henry Jones; a First Class Certificate in French Language and Literature, taught by Charles Martin; a Certificate of Merit for English Language and Literature under Professor Walter A. Raleigh; the Alexander Smart Memorial Prize for Political Economy, taught by Professor William Smart; and a First Class Certificate for Political Philosophy, which he took after graduation in 1906. He took such classes as History, Latin, Mathematics, and Logic and Metaphysics.

Macgregor graduated MA on 18 April 1904. Prior to the outbreak of the First World War, he is recorded to have resided at the family home in Dhallingmhor, Kirn and to have established a reputation as a poet. During the First World War, he joined the London Scottish and saw active service before receiving a commission in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. He served in France and Italy and attained the rank of captain. He was awarded a Military Cross for continuing to obtain information on enemy positions while coming under heavy fire.

After the War, he became a dramatic critic for some years, before occupying various journalistic positions, such as political correspondent, associate night editor, and special correspondent in different areas. In 1935, he became news editor of the Daily Telegraph and Morning Post. He died of a seizure during work on 19 December 1937, with his last-recorded place of residence as being Purley, Surrey.
