LAU, Din Cheuk (Liu dian jue)(劉殿爵) matriculated at the University in 1946 and graduated MA with first class honours in Logic and Moral Philosophy on 29 June 1949. He came to the University on SS Britannic after winning the Victory Scholarship jointly setup by the Hong Kong Government and the British Council. Lau attended classes in English, Logic and Moral Philosophy. He won the Buchanan Prize for Logic in 1946, the first international student of the University to receive this prize.

Lau held a lectureship at the School of Oriental and African Studies, and subsequently professorships at London University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he became Dean of the College of Arts (1980-83). He is internationally renowned for the authoritative translations of the Tao Te Ching("德"), Mencius (孟子) and the Analects of Confucius(-語).
