Biography of Arnold Gomme

Arnold Wycombe Gomme (1886-1959) was Professor of Greek at the University from 1946 until 1957. He was awarded an LLD in 1958.

Born in London, the son of the folklorist Sir George Laurence Gomme, Arnold was a graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge. He was briefly an assistant lecturer in Classics at the University of Liverpool before coming to Glasgow in 1911 as an assistant lecturer and then lecturer in Greek and Greek History. He was Reader in Ancient History for a year before his appointment to the Chair of Greek in 1946.

Gomme served in the First World War in the Intelligence service, and was Temporary Principal Officer at the Treasury during the Second. His war record is included on the Roll of Honour site.
