George Haswell Wilson graduated from the University of Glasgow MBChB 1906. He was a very talented Pathologist and also represented Great Britain for the high jump in the 1908 Olympic Games.
George was born on 13th May 1884 in Glasgow and was educated at Kelvinside Academy before entering the University of Glasgow in 1901. He was a very good student and graduated MBChB 1906 ‘with commendation’.
As well as an apt student, Wilson was also a talented athlete. He played rugby for the University and later for Kelvinside Academicals. He was skilled at the high jump, so much so that he was chosen to represent Great Britain in the Olympic Games of 1908. He was also a keen fly-fisher.
After graduation from the University he spent a year in clinical work at the Western Infirmary as house physician to Professor Ralph Stockman and house surgeon to Dr J. Crawford Renton. Then he worked in the Pathology Department as Coats Research Scholar during 1907-08, Carnegie Scholar in 1908-09 and Carnegie Fellow in 1909-11. In this period, he was awarded the John Reid Prize. Wilson joined Sir Robert Muir’s staff in 1911 when he became University Assistant in Pathology and was also appointed Assistant Pathologist to the Western Infirmary.
George Haswell Wilson was one of the only trained staff left to run the Pathology Unit during the First World War when staff numbers were greatly depleted. In this period, he also took part in the administration of the Western Infirmary while the Superintendent, Colonel Mackintosh, was engaged on military duties. Towards the end of the War Wilson became University Lecturer in Pathology and Bacteriology and in 1917 he also became responsible for the pathological work of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children.
In 1922, Haswell Wilson took up the Chair in Pathology in the University of Birmingham, where he remained for the rest of his life. He was also Consultant Pathologist to the General Hospital, Queen’s Hospital and the Women’s Hospital. Later he was Consultant Pathologist to the United Hospitals in Birmingham. During the Second World War, Wilson acted in the honorary capacity of Director of Pathological Services for the Region. He was also Vice-President of the Birmingham University Athletic Club for many years. George Haswell Wilson retired in September 1949 and he died on 28th February 1951.
