Biography of Norman Davis
Norman Davis (1913-1989) was Professor of English Language at the University from 1949 to 1959.
Born in New Zealand, Davis was a graduate of the University of Otago (MA, 1934) and, as a Rhodes Scholar, Merton College, Oxford (BA, 1936 and MA, 1944). He worked as a lecturer in Lithuania and British Council Reader in English at the University of Sofia before the Second World, during which he was interened in Bulgaria and in Italy, and he was awarded an MBE in 1945. Davis was Lecturer in English Language at Queen Mary College, University of London, from 1946 to 1947, and in English Philology (and, for one year, in Medieval English) at Oriel and Brasenose Colleges, Oxford, 1947 to 1949.
In 1959, Davis left Glasgow to become Merton Professor of English Language and Literature, a post he held until 1980.
